The capital of Paraná is 318 years old and is located in the South of Brazil. With a GNP of US$ 12.1 billion/year, the city’s per capita earnings amount to approximately US$ 8 thousand/year, as compared to the national average of US$ 5 thousand/year. It is the only Brazilian city to enter the 21st century with a national and international reputation for its exceptional urban planning and quality of life. In March of 2001, a research study sponsored by the UN designated Curitiba as the best state capital in Brazil according to the Standard of Living Index (SLI). The majority of its 1.75 million inhabitants are descendents of Italian, Polish, German, Ukrainian, Japanese, Syrian and Lebanese immigrants. Nationally and internationally renowned for its innovative urban solutions, the city has the most efficient transport system of the country and is proud of its rate of 55 square metres of green area per inhabitant. It is considered the Ecological Capital of Brazil.

5.2 PLACE OF THE EVENT

The 7th Psi Meeting will take place in the Garcez Building, located at Av. Luis Xavier, 103, in Curitiba city centre. In the 1920s, Curitiba had about 79 thousand inhabitants. At that time, the traditional street called Rua XV de Novembro was already the main point of the city, buzzing with pedestrians. At the end of the decade, in 1927, the Moreira Garcez Building was constructed, the first “skyscraper” of Paraná and the third in the country. The building was designed by John Moreira Garcez, architect and former mayor of Curitiba.
